How To Select Wrist Rests?

ergonomic accessoriesFor the most part, wrist rests are an excellent way to save your wrists from unneeded stress and strains and even from developing chronic pain or carpal tunnel syndrome.

This is why they are one of the most popular ergonomic purchases that people make for their home offices since they save wrists from strain and help make moving the mouse more comfortable.

However, in order to work properly you have to ensure that you select a wrist rest that helps keep your arm straight and can provide support and cushion for your wrist.

For some people they are not effective because of extensive hand movement while using their wrist rests so it may cause other problems with the rest.

For help in selecting wrist rests that will work properly for you, the following ergonomic tips will aid you tremendously.

Two of the things that you need to focus on right away when selecting wrist rests are how your arm sits while on the mouse. The wrist pad should be elevated high enough so that while sitting at your desk your arm is even and straight with the mouse and is not slanted.

If this does not happen, either you need to choose a desk that is a better fit for you, move your chair position up or down, or you may need to look at other wrist rests options.

Also, you need to make sure that your hand slides easily onto the wrist rest pad without too much friction because the more friction upon contact that your hand experiences while on the mouse the less useful it will be at protecting you from excessive strain.

Next, you need to choose a wrist rest that has a mouse surface also built into it that is large enough so that you do not have to keep lifting the mouse up to start over again, and one that is not too long that you find yourself stretching due to the fact that you can.

Normally, it is the smaller mouse pads that you need to worry about but repetitive actions such as picking up your mouse over and over are one of the chief reasons why people develop carpal tunnel syndrome.

Finally, you should select wrist rests that have a moue surface that is about as wide as the mouse itself.

When you have more room you will be more inclined to mouse to the side left and right which will cause undue strain on your wrist and can lead to problems in the future.

So to avoid this situation simply do not give yourself the option to stray sideways.
