The iPad – Changing Mobile Business Computing?

If there is one new gadget that is causing a real frisson in computing circles, it is the iPad; everyone has an opinion (some who have not so much as seen the new Apple tablet).

However, it appears to be the opinion across the board, that this is path breaking, and likely to greatly impact mobile business computing as well know it. Some voices:

  • According to Walt Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal there are drawbacks to be sure, but the iPad has the potential to replace the laptop much of the time in instances such as data communication, content consumption and even limited content creation. Of course whether it does replace your laptop or not depends on what you do use your computer for.
  • According to New York Times’ David Pogue lack of Flash and multitasking are major iPad drawbacks. The plusses however are that it is fast and light; and the screen is responsive, bright and multi touch. Also the software is easy to navigate.
  • Andy Ihnatko of The Chicago Sun-Times is clearly bowled over as he says the iPad is one of the best computers ever and the best one that he has. However, he is not getting rid of his notebook just yet.
  • Dwight Silverman of the Houston Chronicle is of the view that the iPad is a new category of mobile device rather than a replacement for the laptop.
