One of the keys to avoiding infections is to keep hands clean. This is very important when you work on keyboards all day long which can harbor a number of different infective bacteria.
It is particularly important when you work on shared computers.
Sometimes it is not possible or practical to keep washing your hands and for this reason a hand sanitizer becomes very convenient. Here are some tips for hand sanitizer use:
- Pick a brand with 60% or more alcohol content; this will ensure that the product is going to be effective for killing bacteria.
- Use a coin size amount. Use enough for it to be effective.
- Rub it in well for about 30 seconds, covering the entire palm, the back of the hands, fingers and the space between as well.
- Wait until it dries. If it dries out in less than 10 seconds, it probably means you didn’t use enough.
- If you are using a hand sanitizer regularly, you should also moisturize your hands regularly. This is because the alcohol can dry out the skin.
- If hands are visibly dirty or bleeding, use soap and water, avoiding the sanitizer at that time
- Keep one in office, one in your bag as well as one in the car so that it is at hand whenever you need it.
