A report was published by the University Of North Carolina School Of Medicine, which said that too much use of computer notebooks could lead to physical ailments such as muscle soreness in the back and the shoulders, headaches and even carpal tunnel syndrome.
In particular, it was laptops that were mentioned as being more likely to result in long term physical pain, because of their unified physical construction and design that offer few options of use(as against the PC or desktop).
Problems can occur due to the hunched back posture required to look down into the screen, nerve damage to the wrists that occurs due to awkward placement during typing of small, even cramped keyboards.
In particular, it is students who are susceptible to these problems as they need to use a portable device for their studies; carrying their laptops to school and back home and being on their computers for extended periods. Laptop use tips for students include:
- Proper seating
- A larger monitor while at a desk
- Breaks every 20 minutes to change position and to stretch muscles
- Drinking plenty of water
